About the Program

CHS offers free literacy classes in American Sign Language for individuals interested in becoming more independent in personal and social aspects of daily living, improving pre-employment and employment-related skills as well as preparing for other education and training.

 

What we offer
Classes are free-of-charge and funded by the Ontario Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD).

 

Our experienced instructors teach students:

  • using American Sign Language (ASL)

  • English – reading and writing

  • math

  • job search skills – Internet searches, cover letter and résumé review, filling out applications, and workplace literacy

  • critical thinking and problem-solving

  • use of communication devices and communication strategies

  • computer skills

  • personal daily living activities using community resources (i.e. banks, shops, public transportation)

  • preparation for employment

 

Instruction is provided one-on-one and in group sessions in ASL either on-site, off-site, by e-learning or video conference.LBS – is available to permanent residents of Ontario aged 19+.
